At Mrs Ethelston's the children begin their language journey through French songs and phrases in EYFS and Key Stage one.  They take part in the telling of simple stories and learn to count to ten throughout their daily learning. Teaching a language is not a statutory requirement in KS1, however we strongly believe this early insight into language gives pupils a firm foundation to build their knowledge.

In Key Stage 2, the children take part in structured French lessons weekly. They learn the basics of French grammar and sentence structure, exploring masculine and feminine adjectives and pronouns, as well as gradually building up the complexity of their sentences as they progress through the school. The discussion and practise of words and phrases is integral and takes part in a variety of ways.  By the time they begin secondary school, pupils will have a strong foundation for learning another language.
